First of all, in whatever genre, we look for good, solid, professional writing. That you've published a kazillion pieces --- or never submitted your work for publication --- matters not. What matters to us is that the piece is (A) well-written and (B) well-thought (we get many submissions that have one or the other, but not both). Kudzu accepts submissions from anyone and does not discriminate on any basis other than an admittedly subjective review of the work, not the author. Kudzu does NOT publish previously published works (and that usually includes your own personal web site).

FICTION
We want short fiction (7,500 words or less) that is written well and tells a good story. As far as subject matter goes, we're pretty open, we just want to see solid, compelling stories. We cannot publish works that use copyrighted characters or material ("fan fiction," it's usually called).

ESSAY
With essays, we're primarily looking for strong writing that gets us (and our readers) engaged in the subject. Personal essays, travelogues, humor, cultural or social commentary --- style doesn't so much matter, as long as it's interesting, engaging, and --- of course --- well-written.

How to submit
Submissions to Kudzu should be sent to the magazine via Internet email. Files must be plain ASCII sent in the body of the email message. DO NOT send files of any sort as attachments to your email. ANY SUBMISSION THAT DOES NOT ARRIVE IN THIS FORM WILL BE DELETED.

Please include a stable email address and a short bio.

For those who do not have Internet email access, please contact the Editor for a snail mail address to which you can send snail mail submissions. All snail mail submissions should include: a hard copy printed neatly on white paper with generous margins (at least 1"), a self-addressed stamped envelope for replies, and an electronic copy of the submission on 3.5" floppy disk (Windows, DOS, or Macintosh ONLY in PLAIN TEXT or WORDPERFECT formats ONLY). ANY SUBMISSION THAT DOES NOT ARRIVE IN THIS FORM WILL BE DISCARDED.

BOOKS FOR REVIEW
If you have a book currently in print or one that's about to be published, we are looking for books to review for the new Kudzu Reviews (to premiere in Kudzu 98.2 in June 1998). The Kudzu Reviews will consist of long-format review essays in the spirit of the New York Review of Books, with some smaller short take reviews as well. Please contact the editor by email for a snail mail address for review copies and press kits.
