Introducing The TCT Folio

After almost eight years on the Crowded House mailing list, we've discovered some great thinkers and writers. The TCT Folio is a way to showcase the enthusiasm and intelligence of these fans, giving them an opportunity to write "essays" on Neil Finn and aspects of his career as a musician and songwriter.

When the spirit moves us, we will approach some Neil fans with a topic, some angle on Neil's career. It might have something to do with how he is marketed; it might focus on his family or regional roots; or it might even be a study on Neil's hair and clothing styles over the last two decades. (We know you're all champing at the bit for those pieces.) In any case, after a focus is chosen, we will ask fans to exploit that angle in an essay.

The first TCT Folio topic seemed obvious enough: Anticipation.

After Crowded House fans got over the shock of the breakup of the band in 1996, they began looking forward to the first Neil Finn solo project. They suffered through almost two years of rumor mills. Now, the moment of truth is almost upon them ... Try Whistling This will be released (almost) worldwide on June 15 and 16.

A few weeks ago, we asked three fans of all things Finn to give us some thoughts on what they were thinking about as the release date approached. The only requirement for writing for this folio: They were not to have heard any of the soon-to-be-released album. (This wasn't as easy as it may sound: many advance copies of Try Whistling This, both official and bootlegged, were floating around the list weeks before the release.)

Colleen Matan (who hails from Washington, DC, USA), Matt Lucas (Houston, TX, USA), and Marjorie Cardwell (Melbourne, Australia) rose to the occasion and gave us the first essays that make up the first TCT Folio.

We hope you enjoy reading these pieces, and we welcome your comments. Contact us at marck@nwu.edu.
