Hinduism Today Vol 17 Issue 7 July '95
If you want to find out what's going on in the Hindu world, this is the place to go. About a billion people practice Hindu religions worldwide. As continuously practiced spiritual paths (there are a variety of different practices), these are probably the oldest in the world.

This issue has a cover story on Pat Robertson denouncing Hinduism as "Demonic" and saying it's time to convert India and keep Hinduism out of the US. Another cover article talks about the affect a "living saint" is having on some villages in India and globally. There's a great centerfold piece on a Siva temple in India called Chidambaram.

Recommended for depth on Hindu paths as well as political updates on religious freedom issues.

Accord: Journal of the Council of the Magickal Arts Vol 15 Issue 4 September '95
Included in this issue are updates on the Council of the Magical Arts (CMA) organizational doings, officers, and committees as well as a calendar of events. This issue is focused on "Gods and the Divine Masculine." The cover has a drawing of a fairly malevolent looking horned god with vampire fangs; no gentle Lord of the Forest here. "The Master of the Hunt: A Look at Cernunnos as the Lord of Death" goes well in tone with the cover. The design for this issue looks great. Other articles also partake of darkish energy as a theme. Not in a bad way but in a "going into the Underworld" way. This seems a solid zine rooted in a fairly established community in TX. Worth checking out.

Artemesia's Magick!: In Celebration of the Olde Ways Vol 3 Issue 9 Summer '95
The theme is "Re-Creation." Fairly clean layout but still looks like desktop publishing (DTP) output, if you know what I mean. "True Love Waits" looks at early Catholic Church teachings on the masculine and feminine. "Kettle and Hearth" contains recipes for charms and other kitchen witchery. "Yea Olde Herbe Shoppe" describes how to make mustards (several kinds) and some of the lore around mustard. "Of Wool and Of Linen: Period Ritual Garb" gives tips and designs for making robes and tunics. In general, this zine is strongest in its practical articles and how to make things.

Azrael Project Newsletter Vol 4 Issue 2 Winter 95-96
The purpose of The Azrael Project is "to put forth the word of the Angel of Death and thereby conquer fear through understanding." I like the utter seriousness of these people. No pretension that I can sense, just a narrow, serious focus on the subject of death (which, as APN says, comes for everyone.) There are network listings for people to contact each other. APN also includes some poetry, fiction, reviews, a calendar, and several accounts of personal encounters with Death. They also run a gallery, library, and museum. This is worth checking out if death interests you. These folks seem have a deep sense of spiritual purpose and integrity about their fascination with death rather than a purely morbid basis, if that makes sense to you.

Calendar of Events October '95
The place to go for national listings of Pagan events and festivals. They are brief, to the point, and contain all the contact and price (if any) info you need. This is an example of a zine finding a very specialized niche and doing it well. It has no articles, no opinion, and no rhetoric; just the straight dope. A four page local listing for MD, VA, and DC is available for $9, $16 for both national and local calendars.

The Cloven Hoof: The Official Bulletin and Tribunal of the Church of Satan Issue 126 August '95
The original *Cloven Hoof*, as published by the Church of Satan since 1967, suspended publication in 1988 with issue #125. Now, after a seven-year hiatus they picked up where they left off.

Blanche Barton wrote a very powerful piece that likens Paganism/Wicca to a form of New Age "Neo-Christianity." She explained nine major similarities between Christians and Wiccans, the overwhelming being dualism, that is orienting on a good vs. evil axis. Then she elaborated on the major differences between Neo-Pagans and Satanists. I have to admit I enjoyed reading the extensive overview of urban legends surrounding Anton LaVey and the Church of Satan. Besides the Proctor & Gamble "connections" and the "I Love You" postage stamp, did you hear the one about the Church owning Santa Claus, California.

Regular features include the "By Any Other Name" section that reports on Satanist spin-offs and rip-offs. It's good to have this one back, giving a clear voice to this oft misunderstood belief.

Crescent: A Publication for young Pagans, Witches, and Wiccans Vol 1 Issue 2 Lammas '95
Formerly a publication called *Phases*. This issue has some striking graphics, unsurprising with an editor at RISD. *Crescent* is the best of the zines I've seen aimed at younger Pagans. Generally intelligent and with a more mature voice than what I usually see in similar zines. It is more for a college-aged crowd rather than a high school or younger group. "Magical Make-up" explores the history and modern use of cosmetics. "Pagan Decorations" explains some correspondences between the ritual elements and the elements of sense (hearing, smell, etc.) Some very nice black and white graphics and a really great color logo. _Crescent_ is still a little raw around the edges but it's definitely worth getting. The sub cost is sliding scale from $12-$25.

Crone Chronicles: A Journal of Conscious Aging Issue 24 Autumn '95
A great zine that fills a huge spiritual need in the popular landscape. The theme is "Soul and Money." Several articles look at the relationship of crone women to money. "The Two Becoming One" looks at finding a way to combine making money and feeding the soul. "Coping with Loss: Gifts from the Fire" details the loss of all the author's possessions in the Oakland Firestorm. "Living Like a River" is an interview with Fran Peavey. This zine is recommended for women who identify with the crone whether they are young or old.

Dir. to Canadian Pagan Resources Vol 7 '95-'96
Organized geographically, this directory is good for learning about Pagan and Pagan friendly groups, stores, and events in Canada. The directory, well-established in its seventh annual edition, also includes listings for women's bookstores and gay and lesbian bookstores. Some of the descriptions of places are very brief but offer a pithy essence. Good source for networking in Canada.

Freethought History Issue 14 1995
The history and culture of atheism, agnosticism and related movements are covered here in an intellectual way. "Freethought in the American South" covers the history of these traditions in the Bible Belt. A booklist accompanies the article. A brief remembrance of John Marthaler indicates that he was a very public atheist in Pascagoula, MS. There's a column of news and notes commenting on items in the news. I tried an experiment and substituted every use of "freethought" with "Christian." The sentences often sounded like, well, the sort of things Christians say. I guess it's just a matter of perspective. This is a reasonable newsletter and worth checking out if you like the subject.

"Jerry Garcia Memorial Issue." The features are grouped under the title "Psychedelic Tribalism." There are several articles on the topic of how Jerry Garcia and/or the Greatful Dead helped the authors develop their personal spirituality. "Mythology in the Modern World: An Overview of the Life and Work of Joseph Campbell" is a good synopsis of the major themes in Campbell's work. "Through the Seasons" tells how to use berries harvested in the autumn. An article on Norse runes gives some calendar lore and details of some of the individual runes. An aromatherapy article concentrates on the properties of lavender. "Religion vs. Spirituality" compares the words and their meanings in a fresh way. Other articles of note: "Creative Ritual for Solitaires" and "The Three Worlds of the Oide: A view through the eyes of a celtic shaman." Note: Subs are sliding scale: $13-22/yr.

From the same group that publishes *Universal Truth* comes this zine that encorages children to explore their spiritual side. It too emphasises the Center's ideas about Universal Truth, but it does it gently, to inspire children to understand God.

There's a very gentle story about the spritiual aspects of healing, a story about a timid pet, and a prayer for children.

Holy Smoke: For People Who Need Good Medicine Fall '95
*Holy Smoke* is a unique zine addressing the spiritural aspects of marijuana. They combine spirituality with ecology, politics, and medicine into a persuasive package for legalizing marijuana.

Joan Bello writes about marijuana and glaucoma, and also tosses in a plea for action against animal testing. Dennis Peron and Dr. L. Grinspoon, in different places speak about marijuana and compassionate use. Several people behind bars for marijuana infractions write of their experiences. If you are interested in reforming marijuana laws for any reason (compassionate use, economics of hemp, spirutal use), this is the publication for you -- there are lots of networking addresses here as well.

Nice color cover with hemp paper used for the inside pages.

Horns and Crescent Vol 1 Issue 8 Fall Equinox 95
The big draw of _Horns and Crescent_ is its events listing for the New England area. At the moment, this is the *best* zine to go to for networking. Since it comes out every 6 weeks or so, it is timely and up to date. It also doesn't seem to be too partisian and promotes events from different types of Pagan groups, an almost unique attitude in the Pagan community. "PodNet Covers New England" describes the history and current state of the Pagan/Occult Distribution Network (PodNet), a computer bulletin board network. There is a brief review of Pantheocon, a Pagan conference held in Leominster, MA. If you are Pagan and live in the NE area, this is worth every cent and more. Rating: Four Pentacles. Recommended.

Inner Growth Forum Vol 1 Issue 1
A pricey little zine that I was prepared to dislike but found engaging anyway. Beyond some of the new age and psychological bafflegab is a genuine call to those people seeking spiritual paths and teachers to be critical in their search. This is an attitude all too rare among those who think of themselves as "new age" sorts. There's a section on "Q&A on Inner Growth," a title to make me cringe, which advises people to be clear about the differences between psychological and spiritual growth. There are also some personal stories.

*Mantic* (of or relating to the faculty of divination; prophetic) in this case refers mostly to Tarot. _Manteia_ is published in Denmark but has correspondents around the world and a US contact for subs. This issue has reviews and black and white illustrations of several Tarot decks: The Tarot of the Orishas, The Egyptian Oracle, The Contrast Deck, The Vertigo Tarot, and others. There is an opinion piece on "Do We Need Certified Tarot Masters?" and a critical review of *Women of the Golden Dawn: Rebels and Priestesses* by Mary K. Greer. *Manteia* is a little pricy but they plead international postal and banking costs, a reasonable explanation to me.

Moonweb Issue 16 October '95
I'm not even sure this could be called a zine but it's interesting. Circle Cithaeron periodically sends out these rituals and pathworkings designed to be worked/done at a particular time. This links everyone, solitaries and groups, doing it together and strengthens the affect of the work. The one for Samhain '95 is to remember the dead and to try to make the world a more hospitable place, particularly for the birds who are nearing extinction. The price is two U.S. first-class stamps or equivalent check (payable to Moonweb) per issue. Inquiries should send a SASE with two stamps.

The Mystic's Wheel of the Year: An Eco-Egalitarian Multicultural Creation Spirituality Meditation 1996
This calendar opens with a couple of pages describing Creation Spirituality. Actually, it reads like a manifesto or creed rather than a simple description. The months are presented in a standard format with the phases of the moon shown but no specific times are given. On the page above the calendar proper is a dense, day by day listing of specific sacred days from many traditions. Christian, Celtic, Egyptian, and Greek holidays are represented as well as some politically noteworthy days (Martin Luther King's birthday, UN ban on chemical weapons.) There is also a monthly focus (February: Preparing for Rebirth) and meditational themes such as "Goddess as the Purifier" and "God as Sown Seed." I wish the calendar was big enough for writing daily notes or appointments but it is not. This is a nice calendar but I feel it suffers from trying to cram too much information into too small a space.

Pagan APA Issue 81 August '95
_Pagan APA_ always has great diversity, stimulating conversation, and often surprising food for thought. There's a bit of the soap opera in this issue with Sam Wagar's tale of being booted out of the Temple of the Lady. His description of the circumstances, although biased, is sadly reminiscent of other situations I've seen in the Pagan community. There's the usual back and forth discussions going on. If you enjoy *participating* in written discussion in a generally Pagan vein, you should check it out.

Pagan Dawn: The Journal of the Pagan Federation Issue 116 Lammas '95
_PD_ is a long running British zine formally called _The Wiccan_. This is an excellent source for networking with listings for Pagan groups and "Moots" which is an informal meeting of Pagans, usually in a pub or public place. Listings also include Pagan items, services, publications, personals, and networking. "Trance Dance and the Fetish Cult" is about a possession cult and the Fetish Priestesses and Priests of Nanaetrewa in Ghana. There's a short history of the Atlantis Bookshop in London, a 70 year old occult store. One story chronicles some of the public and legal overreaction to herb and plant poisoning. Note: International banking costs being what they are, prices are cash dollars from the U.S.

Pagans for Peace Issue 70 July '95
*PFP* is a newsletter representing some political Pagans in Canada.

Some of this issue briefly describes the editor's expulsion from the Temple of the Lady, a network/group in British Columbia. Although it was obviously an acrimonious situation, the editor was remarkably evenhanded about presenting the situation in fairly neutral terms. He also gives the address of the Temple for people who want to hear the other side of the story. There is a letter discussing Pagans and cirumcision. An article about "Pagan Parenting: Our Children in School" rounds out the issue.

Queen Mab: An Illustrated Pagan Journal Vol 1 Issue 3 Bealtaine '95
This reminds me of a publication out of time; A Victorian lady's hobby done for one's own amusement. There are some Victorian style b/w illustrations reminiscent of Edward Gorey and Aubrey Beardsley, particularly Beardsley's work on Oscar Wilde's *Salome*. The writing style is also of the time. Articles often seem to be in story form. "Sooner or Later, One Must Stop Blaming Mother" is a retelling of a creation myth with some humourous twists. _QM_ has a very distinct style that is refreshingly different from many Pagan zines.

The Red Queen: For Women Who Never Make Bargains Vol 2 Issue 3 Autumn '95
An editorial mourns the passing of Elizabeth Montgomery, fondly remembered by some as Samantha of *Bewitched* on TV. "Letting Evil Out of the Closet" looks at an *X-Files* episode and ponders a Pagan conception of evil. "When you find out" attempts to look unflinchingly at the full visage of the Crone and her affects on our lives. "The Charge of the Goddess... Revisited" uses the Charge as a basis for an often moving appeal to live the words of it every day. There's some book reviews that aren't afraid to be critical. A good issue with some laughter and some tears.

Recommended for intelligence and general high quality.

The Sacred Oak Vol 1 Issue 3 October '95
An angry Satanist zine that doesn't hide how it feels. The writing is intense and extensive, exploring the subject in depth.

In this new, lower-priced issue, Jeffrey Deboo discussed the difference between instinct and willfull self-awareness, and then explained the relationship that Satan plays in rebellion. In another essay he explained why anti-Semitism has no rational basis in the Satanic philosophy.

SageWoman: Celebrating the Goddess in Every Woman Issue 31 Autumn '95
*SageWoman* is dedicated to women's spirituality as it relates to earth and nature spirituality. The theme this issue is "Death, Transformation and Rebirth." "The Hound of Hecate" is a personal account of fear of dying with some nice b/w artwork. "Erishkegal: Goddess of Thankless Tasks" is a look at a sometimes maligned goddess from the myth of the descent of Inanna. "Initiation of Sekmet" tells how a vision affected the author's life. Other articles of interest are "An Encounter with Death," "Trusting the Dark," and "Our Serpent Selves." The back cover has a very good color painting of the goddess Durga. The letters column is lively, full of insights and reflections.

Samhain: Voice of the Abyss Issue 5 Summer '95
The text for a couple of rituals is included here: a "Regeneration Ritual" and a full moon ritual originally enacted on the Delphi online service. The rest of the issue is mostly taken up with poetry and some fiction. There are some striking b/w illustrations by the editor. My favorite: the cover Jack-o-lantern. This issue leans in the direction of techno-paganism.

The Serpent's Tail Vol 5 Issue 4 August '95
_Serpent's Tail_ seems to try to be a community oriented zine for the Milwaukee, WI area. "Solar Myths from Ancient Cultures" uses excerpts from books to describe the myths of the Egyptian, Aztec, Inca, and others. "Patriarchal Death Watch" predicts doom for the current Pope from some of the verses of Nostradamus. A Tarot column covers the Tower and the Star cards. There's a pathworking or meditation focusing on the Minoan Snake Priestess. They reprint two pages of Larry Cornett's _Calendar of Events_ in the back.

The Shaman Papers Vol 6 Issue 4 Winter '95
This issue is a double issue, so $5 for the sample rather than the regular $3. _TSP_ is cleanly DTPed (in MN) considering that it "is written in a log cabin, no phone, electric, or plumbing" in Alaska. Getting to know rose quartz is the subject of "User-Friendly Rocks." There are a several book reviews including two books on drugs. The first two installments of a satire are only moderately funny. There's also an article on "Local Color" for Alaska with a couple of tales and some politics. This issue isn't as shamanic as other issues I've seen.

Songs of the Dayshift Forman: Journal of a Rainforest Witch Vol 1 Issue 64 Midsummer '95
A long piece called "When Mountains Move" describes the author's personal spiritual development from coalfields to priestess. "A Call for More Scientific Truth in Product Warning Labels" is a quite humorous series of label warnings mostly based on quantum theory. "Ethics, Oaths and ways in which we make decisions" is a fairly detailed exercise for a group to establish the ethics in particular situations. There is also a calendar and book reviews. The content is unusually dense for its size. That means it has little fluff and mostly very good stuff.

Supple and Turbulent Issue 1 December 14, 95
This is the first chapter of a nine-part serial novella to be published one part every six weeks for a year. This chapter shows that there is strong Wiccan content (two main characters are Priest/esses of a Wiccan Coven). Add in a college town, tattooing, and a description of a ritual and I think this is of some interest to Pagans. The first chapter is named "Yule." The writing is slightly strained in places but the character development is good. Conflicts introduced in this chapter engage the reader and carry the narrative forward. If you're interested in fiction with specifically Wiccan and magickal content (it's rare), this is worth checking out.

Symphony: A Magazine of Magick and Harmony Issue 13 Fall '95
"Symbols of Fire" draws some of the connections and images related to the element of fire. "Kitchen Witch" has several recipes that bring out the fire in your tongue; they're very spicy. There's ceremonial script for "The Greater Ritual of The Pentagram" that's a little difficult if you're not familiar with the Kabbalah. Basically, this is a fire issue with some focus on earthy things (garden, cooking, etc.)

The Trojan Cailleach: A Publication of the Ancient Religions Society Vol 1 Issue 5 Lammas '95
This issue is remarkable in its lack of coherence. There are a few very short articles covering a little more than 2 pages. The rest is a hodgepodge of Pagan factoids, puzzles, and networking notes for groups, stores, and newsletters. There are also some organizational notes for the Ancient Religions Society (a group loosely affiliated with University of Southern California students), commenting on who has written them and what they've gone through trying to organize this group.

What is Enlightenment: Dedicated to the discovery of enlightenment and what it really me Vol 4 Issue 2 Summer '95
This generally seems to be a publication for followers of Andrew Cohen although it is mostly filled with articles and interviews about other people. Swami Krishnananda, Barry Long, Lee Lozowick, and John Wren-Lewis are among the featured people. Since the magazine is founded by Andrew Cohen as well as including several articles by him, this has the distinct feel of a "cult of personality" for all of its talk of enlightenment (used seven times on the cover.) New Agey and for those who seek inspiration by following someone else's lead.

Yggdrasil Vol 12 Issue 3 Freyfaxi '95
Part II of "He Seidh/She Seidh: On the Metaethics of Oracular Seidhr" continues to make great points that can be more widely applied to almost all forms of divination. (Seidhr is a traditional Norse method of trance divination.) "Branny the Neolithic God and Barney the Dinosaur" pokes fun at the kiddy icon with great wit. There are a few calendar and networking items and a funny poem with diverse mythologies cited. *Yggdrasil* is mostly of interest to those people focused on the Northern/Norse type spiritual stuff but I think other Pagans would enjoy it as well. A small zine of quality and humor.
