Alien Issue 7
Witknee seems to be getting off on the newfound power and freedom of her life. She finished high school, made the decision not to go to college, and is taking her problems one day at a time.

Her rant about sexuality was right on. She's done identifying herself as heterosexual, and even though she's never been with a woman, she now realizes that gender isn't such a determining factor in who she falls in love with. She's also getting tired of hearing all these boy bands and boy zines talk about sexism like they really know what it's about. It seems they are jumping on a bandwagon or political grandstanding without feeling the problem first hand.

Angry Young Woman Vol 1 Issue 4 August '95
If you are a smoker, a lazy co-worker, or God forbid, a man from Gloria's past, you might need a bullet proof vest to read this one.

It's definitely the most eloquent and angry thing I've read in a while. Her feature "How do I hate men? Let me recount the ways..." tells the sorry tale of one guy who would make plenty of women leary on dating. I particularly liked her rant on the injustices of the working world. Gloria says it sucks being poorer than all her co-workers who married wealth and didn't go to college, but not being dependent on some guy more than makes up for it. A much-improved issue of compelling rage.

This is a zine by and for angst-ridden rocker chick girls of color. An interview with Cub; a long interview with Tribe 8; diagrams of a Valley Girl bedroom and a Bamboo Girl bedroom; interview with Sexpod; Taglog phrasebook; a statement from a group of lesbians of color who are leaving the Lesbian Avengers; Barbara talks bout how Mattell made her stop doing her zine *Hey There! Barbie Girl;* Philippine martial arts; a conversation with Leslie Mah of Tribe 8; an experience of getting treated like a sex object on the street; horoscopes, including favorite Urotsokidoji scene and favorite band; Sabrina's perky mainstream twin sister Serena writes a column.

Lots of fun grrrl stuff that still addresses some important issues.

There's a long reprint of female circumcision that was quite horrifying to read. We also get a lengthy transcript of a Courtney Love interview taken from America Online, as well as a new round of Courtney's email. Cool crayon-tinted cover.

Coitus Reservatus Issue 1
Powerful and important reading for the post Riot Grrrl set. Meshall looks at the core of our patriarchal, gender biased society and wants to know why things can't be different.

One of the brightest pieces was a collection of menstrual stories that range from the die-of-embarrassment type to the downright gross. How would you like to be standing in line at the bank next to a cute guy and have your pad fall out of your shorts onto his shoe? (Thinking about this a second time I wonder if that's even possible.) There's also a great rant on women peeing in places that discriminate like voting booths, art galleries, and classic rock stations.

CupSize Issue 4 Fall '95
Political and fun, this zine by Sasha and Emelye covers everything from bisexuality to music to shopping.

Sasha writes in this issue about AIDS anxiety and how the media exploits our fears, even in people who are "low risk." For all of you unwilling to commit to Generation X, now there's Generation P, Sasha's designation for all those poor under-30s who survive and thrive on pasta (and not that upscale fresh stuff either). There's also notes on the new "Bisexual Chic" wave of media, Emelye's defense of working for small locally owned businesses, and Sasha's about getting to know her eyebrow tweezers (ouch!).

Cusp Issue 1
This zine is done by Sara, who used to be one of the people who did *Out of the Vortex.* Visting the Gertrude Stein status in Bryant Park, a visit marred by an encounter with a Dittohead; a woman binds her chest; getting labeled as a forigner; thoughts about riot grrrl and post-r.g. groups; a report on NOW's Young Feminist Summit Against Violence; Sara works as a summer camp counselor and doesn't shave her legs, despite worries the kids would tease her.

The writing is thoughtful, focused, and spirited but what I like most about this zine is the wide range of opinions spread throughout its pages.

My favorate part is the two-page spread on Henry Rollins. They reprinted his Powerbook ad and explained why he gets the "Big Asshole Award." At the other end of the spectrum we get a defense of hippies written by a punk.

Girlie Jones: Art, politics, & popular culture in the lives of young women Vol 1 Issue 3 August '95
Inspirational voice for women who have more on their minds than just music and picking out a new dress. Some of the material is a bit sad and reminisces about a more carefree time when playing in the tub for hours was perfect contentment. But real life is not that easy.

Zoe Miller's contribution about being a girl in the nineties was well done. She explains how girls now have even more pressures and social molding to go through than ever before. There's also the column "Role Models, Not Supermodels" which glorifies people like Jodie Foster instead of Kate Moss.

Hell Kitty Issue 6
This unassuming zine starts off with a surprising interview with Patti Smith. Conducted back in April, they don't quite explain how they were able to pull it off. Patti talked about how she moved from poetry to music, the origins of punk rock, and what feminism means to her. We also get a report on the abortion struggle in Cherry Hill, self-defense techinques, and violence statistics.

Marissa starts off this issue with a story of how she was so flustered when Fran Lebowitz called the office she was working at. I guess it's hard not be impressed to pick up the phone and have a voice say "This is Fran Levowitz." She also told us why she was disapointed with being in the audience at the Letterman show, explained the regional differece between "jimmies" and "sprinkles," and revealed why she changed her opinion of *Pulp Fiction*.

Listen To Me Whine Issue 1 September '95
Unabashed girl writing that comes with a little fluffy pink thing glued to the cover.

Chell tells us what's in her backpack like the book *Girl Power* and cherry chapstick, complains that she always gets her rag during the worst week of her life, and rates zines by their cheese factor (from cheddar on pita to toejam). Color-xeroxed cover.

Looks Yellow, Tastes Red Issue 6
A cool zine with a lot of disscussion of sexuality, girls' rights, and the mainstream vs. the counterculture.

The essay about not being accepted by the punk crowd anymore for looking too mainstream was excellent. Colette has to put up with stuff like that now and fears that the rest of life will always be like high school. There's also an article on homeschooling, a *Cosmo* rant, and a denouncement of sexual repression.

The only zine named after a men's hair tonic. Louisa, Nell, and Emelyne hit on this name after some guy gave them a bottle of *LT* in Taco Bell.

In this premiere issue, they tell us about all the fun things they are into: Bjork, Wild Nick the Jungle Boy, shoes, and the movie *Speed*. There's also a biting rant on the "cool" skaters at Louisa's school who have been skating for a whole month.

Maxine: a literate companion for churlish girls and rakish women Issue 1
This righteous new publication features women writing on topics of interest to women. it has a nice balance of fiction, essays, and criticism.

This issue's "Jane: 12 Months with a Centerfold" was Sari Wilson's great first-person account of a feminist who goest ot work for *Playboy,* and how her feelings about the various photos of naked women change throughout her year-long tenue there. Can friends be lovers? Do butches make the best friends for femmes? *Maxine* hosted a butch/femme discussion on the 'net to find the answers to these questions, and printed the results. I also enjoyed Martha Bayne's look at the Susie Bright-Camille Paglia feud; "The Justice Sisters," another great first-peson account about how friendships grow and change; and "Chicken," a nicely creepy fiction story.

Joan coments on everything from the personal to the political. A primative layout but it all comes straight from the heart.

I like all her ranting on society this issue. She tells us why men have no place in the right-to-life movement, how great Long Island sXe is, that condoms should be advertised, and how she can't stop falling for cute punk rock boys. Ten page interview with True Zero.

Katy, who also publishes *The Jellybean*, has undertaken a new project to help spread the word on girl zines. She sent eleven publishers a set of personal questions and printed their responses.

It's good to see that people had fun with the questionnaires. For the line "One place you would really like to visit," Sarah-Katherine from *Pasty* wrote "Chelsea Clinton's panties." Katy is looking for more girl publishers to contribute and wants to see the network grow.

Wives Tales Vol 1
From the editor of *Skew* comes this thick do-it-yourself guide to women's health, gynecology, and natural healing. Very radical, in both attitude and content, as they stress for people to take control of their own health care.

It starts with the basics of gynecological self-examinations and then moves on to PMS, cramps, and natural alternatives to maxipads. I found the health care section most informative, covering vaginal infections, urinary tract infections, and STDs. The most empowering section is probably the part about natural birth control. They give instructions for a homemade spermicide and two different technique for avoiding pregnancy immediately after unprotected sex. If that doesn't work their a plethora of recipes for using herbs to induce abortions. An excellent guide for keeping incompent doctors away from your body.
