105% Real: Sketchbook Selections July '95
Lauren is an incurable sketchbook addict, filling up four books a year. Instead of keeping all this work hidden away, she culls the best stuff from each month for publication in this enjoyable mini.

Much of this looks like it was created in a hipster cafe, reminding me more of San Francisco's Lower Haight than New Jersey's suburbs.

The production is personal yet proud, with colorful blockprints on a thick card cover.

Alas Comics: During the days of a civil war in Yugoslavia
Perhaps you've seen Sasa Rekezic's Fantagraphics book *Life Under Sanctions?* It exposed the struggles of life under the UN blockade. In addition to that Sasa also produced a series of minicomics that have been translated, printed, reprinted, and floating around from hand to hand. Perhaps you've come across one? This is a compendium of the first three minis under the *Alas* title. It's a very spooky, almost surreal look at what life is like living in the middle of a battlefield. This isn't an object news report of what's happening, it's simply one person story of the insanity of war.

Chantale Doyle (*Misery and Vomit*) is back with a new limited run series.

The Assassin and the Whiner: Comics by Carrie and Sarah Issue 2
A really fun collection of comics drawn in a bold hip style. They're semi-autobiographical and remind me of the early work of Joe Matt.

On May 8 Carrie was standing on line in front of a couple of annoying nascent hipsters who knew very little beyond Keanu Reeves and Green Day. The experience reminded Carrie of the time she went to a Black Flag concert proudly wearing her Adam and the Ants T-shirt.

Absolutely wonderful.

Beware the Mucus Man: A True Story
A wonderful mini whose only failing is that it's too short. It's a simple story of a minor incident of teasing that got blown way out of proportion. Mike (with Lisa illustrating) created a parable of how words can hurt people when they're young and how things can change as people get older.

Damned are the Pleasure Seekers August '95
Yul Tolbert has done work on a number of zines and most recently published his Timeliketoon Esperanto/Unifon comic. Now he's back with a unique oneshot that mocks modern society's attitude to doing what's immediately gratifying.

Each panel here depicts someone who wants to do something positive but instead plays video games, drives drunk, or buys into consumerism. The best part though is how each character feels absolved of guilt by realizing the conflict and admitting to it. Each peson in the strip is faced with a choice but by saying "I know it's wrong but I'm gonna do it anyway. What can I say?" the characters get off the hook.

I'm so pleased to find that Ariel is now going for real printing with a color cover and everything. I always thought her stuff was a step above the casual work cluttering the minicomics scene -- and now it really stands out. I just love how she illustrates genuine experiences and doesn't shy away from the ugly bits (in fact she kinds focuses on 'em).

It starts with an excellent story of her strained realtionship with her friend Violet. She captures the difficult emotions of a frienship that's on the rocks and describes how confusing it can be for two people to "break up" when they aren't lovers. We also get her joyful rollerskate story and one of the best pieces I've ever read about female body image.

It's real, personal, smart, and very funny.

Dollface Vol 1 Issue 1 September '95
I'm sure many might be turned off by these flat, primative illustrations, but to me, they pefectly compliments Amy Baker's playfully inocent stories.

She illustrates "The Birth of the Angry Beaver," tells us of the girl with the glowworm in her hair, reveals the origins of the coffee crisis, and describes what happens when you visit a "Family Planing Crisis Centre."

Fans of Julie Doucet are encourraged to check it out.

Down and Out in Berkeley Issue 7
This one sucked me right in. With it's somewhat cliched look I thought I've give it the once over but after the first two pages I couldn't stop until page 44. Moby is a masterful story teller, spining this emotional tale of living on the streets of Berkeley and struggling to get by.

Issue #7 starts off with our hero taking shelter from the rain under the awning of the "Protezoa" record store on Telegraph Avenue. After get bounced from place to place, getting wetter and wetter, he meets up with a few friends to get hight and have a drink. We follow I friends through hospital stays, meetings in anarchist squats, brushes with the law, and working at a church. Rastina, "the world's most active activist," tries talking some sense into these guys, but things don't look all that good until Reverend Emmanuel, "the lesbian-punk-rock-anarchist priest" shows up and brings each of them good fortune.

I'm not sure of Moby himself is homeless but I have the sinking suspician that this is based on real experiences.

Odd and disturbing little cartoons from a strange mind. Material runs the spectrum from the grotesque to the downright bizarre.

My favorite piece mocked the prayers of the Church. One panel depicts a bishop entreating God "Hotcha Hotcha - Franco Prussia - 'Atsa Spicy Meatball - Amen." This is deninitely material to keep away from your youth pastor.

Goodies Vol 2 Issue 1
This autobiographic comic relies on one of the more common themes of zinesters, poets, and these days computer geeks; growing up a slight and hopeless nerd in high school.

Pat's problem was accentuated by the swap from an English school to a French Catholic one. There his thin 98 pound physique drew the bullies like zits to a teen-ager. Pat made one friend; a disturbed child who bore a "striking resemblence to a vampire." The tale continues through comic book collecting and World Wide wrestling and ends with the vamp kid selling our protagonist out to the teach.

Well-drawn with fine detail, this comic is a fine testimony to the incubation of teen angst.

The Index of Pure Art Issue 5 Summer '95
Definitely one of the weirder comic works I've seen.

"Tanktops" is about a couple who wear implanted glass jars on their head in place of their skulls so their brains will be visible. What makes the story so weird is the disjointed Lichtensteinish art that is straight from a '50s comic. The story ends with Bob and Betty kissing after her tank job operation but Bob breaks off in mid-embrace as the vision of green elves (!) comes back. I loved it.

I'm sure this will go over well with the conservative Christian crowd. It's about as offensive as the light mockery of Monty Python, but you know how uptight people can be when they see Jesus smoking a joint or sitting down to play quarters with Lucifer.

John's art is fairly rough but his expressive cartooning makes up for a lot. He sent a slew of other titles he's worked on including the excellent "Terrifying All True Army Tales."

Johnny The Homicidal Maniac Issue 1
A new Slave Labor book written and drawn by Jhonen Vasquez.

I think this is an attempt at dark humor in the vein of "Nuke the Smurfs" only in an updated '90s format where serial killing has replaced The Bomb. Several stories feature the Grinch-like Johnny who just moved into the neighborhood and showcase his fascination with killing and torture. The storytelling and art are lighthearted and would fit into the Sunday funnies if it wasn't for their celebration of murder.

Keyhole Mini-comics Vol 1 Issue 4 August '95
A very unique ides for this issue of *Keyhole*. Dean asked David (*Duplex Planet*) Greenberger to contribute a story that can be translated into a comic. The hitch is -- Dean asked *six* different cartoonist to all illustrate the same story. The result is an incredible collection of six different (but at the same time similar) comic stories. Dean (who contributes to *Duplex Planet Illustrated*) filled his interpretation with nostagia; Josh Neufeld (who also draws for *DPI*) put a science fiction spin on it; Nick Gnazzo's story focuses on fear and power; Linda Perkins infuses her's with childhood innocence; Ken Nash has aged wisdom; and Delmo Walters created superhero comic.

This is a comic about hybrid animal/humans. The main story is a twist on the old story of the three pigs. A responsible pig is letting his two freeloading brothers stay with them, since they claim they were being harassed by a wolf. But when the pig meets the wolf, he finds the truth is somewhat different. Turns out the wolf's fantasy is to be topped by a pig, and that's just what happens. We have here an experimental comix, which comes off rather well. Artist Johnk Kline is in college, along with many of his high school friends. Recently, the gang got together and wrote a jam comix which Kline then illustrated. I always like these kinds of spontaneous collaborations and this one is a bit odd. Odd in a good way though. Besides, anything with Kline art in it is worth it. Kline has a very unique style that is all his own.

Steve Keeter has been mentioned before in these pages before for his zine *Skeet's Fan Forum,* but this time he has come out with a massively huge comic. Mainstream comics may not have many bargains, but this is a prime example of the treasure trove of stuff you can still find in small press. A massive volume, *Mantrazone* features an army of small pressers like Larry Blake, Tim Stiles, Steve Shipley and Mark Thoburn. The price is a steal and the stories are really a deal.

Meng & Ecker Vol 1 Issue 9 July '95
The latest collection of disturbing Savoy comics comes out on the heals of another battle over obscenity. Egland has very arbitray obscenity laws which basicaly grant the state absolute power without any chance of holding a fair jury trial.

The main feature here, "Meng's Daughter" is a disturbing tale of sex and decadance that is sure to ruffle the feathers of the British courts. The remainder of the book is more words then pictures, appearing more like illustrated short stories then comics. They also include a collection of essays and newsclips about their battles over censorship.

Mine, Dammit! Issue 34
The ongoing story of Kommix Alley -- the noirish, beatnik night club full of busty dames, and odd characters with names like Marvin Starchaser.

The story is straightforward (about Marvin late for his gig), but I got a sense that it's leading up to something big on the horizon. The real draw here is the art, which at times resembles the old *Mr. X* comic and occasionally some of Clowes's Lloyd Llewellyn strips.

Moe, Investigator of the Odd Issue 3
Moe is a science reporter who meets up with all of nature's strangest creations.

In the feature adventure, a giant armadillo who can squirt acid from his eyes goes on a rampage. No one knows how to stop him until they realize he's merely frustrated that he can't poop. One giant teaspoon of Pepto Bismol bullseyed into his mouth and the city is back to normal. Ty Smith's very clean art is a perfect match for the oddball stories. Reminds me of *The Flaming Carrot* but a little saner.

The Mojo Action Companion Unit Issue 4
The best way to desribe Marc's art and stories is to imagine Julie Doucet and Robert Crumb fused together.

His opener "Oh, Happy Day" with all the freakish characters and talking animals was perfectly weird and reminded me of a Lewis Carrol fairy tale. We also get a pair of dishwashing comics and Marc's tale of anguished sex with his friend's ex. A lot more spirit and effort than I typically see in self-published comix.

New Pompeii: Putting the "Ob" back in "Zine". Vol 1 Issue 8 September, 1995
I started reading _New Pompeii_ with issue #3 and I thought, "Here is a fucking *brilliant* satire of Manga!" It has all the elements, the fashion rebel anti-hero, the terminally cute nihonjin with big eyes, the dorky expat Europeans, the robots, the yakuza conspiracies - the fucking works. But all with this slight satirical nudgenudgewinkwink quality to it. Even in the back issue listing Michael calls it a "manga parody." Well he's gone totally over the top this time. With the fourth chapter of "Rainbow Sport Dude: AET" titled "Emily's Story" the saga is either no longer a parody, or Michael's satire is so sly and subtle that I'm missing it.

In this issue, Michael harkens back to his Canadian minicomic roots with an excellent and intensely personal piece on the 50th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. Plus Jay the Blind Jaywalker, surreal body odor and insights into life in Japan.

Japan *really* is this weird. Michael has a great perspective on it all.

$2 or 200 yen Each , Subs: $12.00 for 6 issues to Michael Hind, Fuji Flat #203, 4-18-23 Wakakusa-Cho Utsunomiya-Shi, T320 Japan (36 Pages/Q/JP) No trades/back issues/no ads/

Noir Vol 1 Issue 1 Summer '95
A really funny minicomic that pokes fun at goth culture. Each page is a different gag cartoon that is strong enough to be reprinted in many a zine. See what happens at a goth wedding, what's in the goth newspaper, or the scaryness of goth nightmares. Final exam question: "Now that you know every catalog number for every Cleopatra release, have memorized vast amounts of literature and can play 100 kinds of sythesized instruments, do you really think you can find a real job while looking like a vampire."

Oatmeal Journal Issue 1 Spring '95
I think this is the first published work for many of the artists in this collection. Some of the strips are a bit puzzling but some show real promise.

My favorite had to be Cade Roster's work that was heavy on shadows and relied solely on the visuals to tell the story. I didn't get the full storyline but his art was innovative enough to carry me along.

Split between serious and comedic works.

Oh, Comics! Issue 8 Summer, 1995
Sometimes a comic is so good, it only comes out once a year. Such is the case of Bob Corby's semi-famous zine. Each year this zine contains a sampling of some of the most talented small pressers around. Looking through this issue, it practically reads like a who's who of small press. Max Ink, Pam Bliss, Tyim Courts, Andrew M. Ford and J. Kevin Carrier are a few of the many contributors. Nicely priced this zine is loaded with stories that are all of high quality. This sampling of work also contains contact information and listing of most recent works, so if something catches your eye you'll know where to go to get more.

Pretend Best Friend Issue 1
This is a great comic zine about a band called the Googra Gustas. It's sort of a parody of British bands like Suede or Blur, but they're queerer than the real bands. For instance, one of the members always has animals for lovers, and there's one member who's had so much plastic surgery s/he doesn't quite remember what gender s/he was originally.

Short messy strips with decent art, but sometimes elusive humor.

I had to laugh though at Jerry's biting spoof of a favorite toy from my childhood. It had pictures of barnyard animals that would talk when you pulled the string. Jerry's is a modern version that draws attention to animal rights. "Cow sez: 'Please don't saw off my feet and force-feed me!'"

Saskatoon Jam Issue 3
It looks like Adam now stepped in to take over the *Jam*. Inside you'll find the work of Robin Bougie, Rebecca Dart, Dave Geary, and several other cartoonists working out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Dave presents a very funny piece about the Saskatoon Berry Boy, who is suposedly the mascott for the city; Roger Williamnson explained the city's rediculous "Blue Laws" that forbid the the purchasing of any non-food items on Sunday; and Robin paid tribute to cartoonist Eric Hampton who was murded back in February. I like the format with half the book inserted as a mini inside and the mini-within-a-mini that explained how that format came to be through the miracle of broken xerox machines.

I never really heard of the Saskatoon scene but I'm rather impressed by this collection.

Skaggiddy Apples Issue 1
Another fine offering from Stinky Armadillo Comix. Speaking of armadillos, I wanted to mention a strange sight I witnessed the other day in the window of second-hand shop. Imagine, if you can, a live armadillo on it's back. Ok, now imagine the thing is dead and all of its guts are hollowed out and just the shell (hide?) remains. Now bend that long, staight tail from one side of the shell to the other. Then laquer the thing up and you've got a fine gift basket.

Now I thought the this was kinda odd and very funny, sorta like this zine I'm reviewing. Course the armadillo didn't have a story about wasting away at a paper pushing job, "For Whom the Quitting Bell Tolls," or a picture story revealing the roots of the Pontiac trademark. But I have a sneaking suspicion that the armadillo basket would fit just fine on the last page of this comic: "Pets of the Surrealists."

Slutburger Issue 5
I've been following Mary Fleener's work for many years now -- so believe me when I tell you that this issue of *Slutburger* features her finest work ever. It continues the story of her early years in the late 70's and early 80's giging and taking drugs and having regretable sex.

While the story is absolutely compelling, it her art that's the real standout. He style has been mutating and maturing over the years but with this book she reaches a new level and takes the entire comic industry with her. Through her trademarked neo-cubist style, she captures turmoil and confusion through people's facial expressions. But what I like best is how she intergrates various daydreams, mental images, subtexts, and personal anecdotes into the main story. If you've ever been interested in Mary Fleener then this is a must-have. If you're interested in seeing the direction comic art is heading then look no further.

Smell of Steve Issue 4
A collection of gross comix that are strangely amusing and compelling. The art sorta reminds me of Mike Diana or Ariel Bordeaux. Since I'm fans of both their work, that may be why I dig this so much.

The main characters are these top hat wearing, cigar smoking, selfish capitalists. They appear in different forms, like as the band Queen proposing to David Bowie to record "Under Pressure" or as an oblivious Phil Collins.

Interesting storytelling with dark overtones of *The Crow* or even *Suburbia*.

The prominent story, "Ybor City Blues" is a pseudo-autobiographical tale of a confirmed loner. He spills a tale of drugs and alcohol, threats of suicide from the theatre stage, and dressing up with friends as "The Sons of Batman" on Halloween. Lots of punks, depression, and sex.

Trash Man Issue 1 Summer, 1995
Another Steve Shipley title is about, you guessed it, a trash man. On the outside he appears to be an every day hard working Joe trying to make a living as a trash collector for Detroit. This average Joe also prowls the streets looking for the more human trash trying to make the world a safer place for all. Kind of weird, but I guess I am partial to Shipley's work. Based upon a story told to him by his grandmother, Richard applies this to the mini-comic format, and tells the tale of how the white man was created by mistake and how our world was populated by all the varieties of man.
