America West Catalog Spring '95
Great source for conspiracy and secret history books. They seem to be tilted more to the right with books oposing Clinton and Socialism but there's plenty here to interest anyone. Lots of books exploring political coverups, alternative health, spiritual prophesy, and UFOs. I think they might have published many of these books.

Ariel's Pages
This would appeal to fans and supporters of *NAMBLA Bulletin* Ariel's Pages distrubutes a wide variety of legal books and magazines the explore the outer edges of social acceptablility. Nothing too graphic, it looks like it's mostly erotic novels and case studies. Familiar titles include *Paidika, Gayme, The Basketball Diaries,* and the video *Chicken Hawk*. It arrived along with the latest issue of the *NAMBLA Bulletin* so I'm certain that it's legit and not some fuckin' FBI sting operation.

Beer Enthusiast: Spring '95 Catalog
Over the years I've searched far and wide for obscure books about beer. My collection is pretty damn good but it took a while to find all these books. The Blowfish Catalog October '95
Blowfish has carved out a nice niche for themselves by carrying a large selection of publications and some very toy-like sex toys -- including erotic novels, picture books, how-to manuals, comix, videos, and even a vulva hand puppet.

This is a short supplimental flyer to tide us over until the Fall catalog is ready. They got some interesting new books that explore erotica with the literary and science fiction traditions. Some classic erotic videos too.

Capitalize on Crime
Yup, these folks play it straight -- there's a lot of money to be made in this media-created crime hysteria. So what if statistics indicate that crime is for the most part steady or even declining. The government and the media would have you think that we're in the midts of the biggest crime wave the country has ever seen. Now's the perfect time to get in the buisiness of selling toxic mace sprays, annoying car alarm system, and dangerous stun guns. Sure it's useless garbage, but these folks think that "with the attention crime gets in today's world, you will not have a problem selling [our] products ... Get moving on what will be one of the best money makers of the 90's -- crime prevention products."

Carolyn's Beads
Carolyn Substitute, publisher of *Lime Green News* and mail artist extrordinaire, handcrafts some incredible decorative beads out of colorful polymer clay. The results are spectacular -- very intricate and bright, reminding me of African "trade beads." Small marbleized spheres to large triangles with a multitude of patterns.

Unfortunately the catalog is plainly xeroxed, but take my word for it, these beads are full of color.

I think she'll send it on request but if you enclose $3 she include a sample selection of beads.

Consumer Information Catalog
When you hear "Boston, Mass 02134" do you think of *Zoom?* Well, some of us still do. What about "Pueblo, Colorado?" Does the phrase "Consumer Information Catalog" ring a bell?

As silly as it may seem, you can find some good information here -- pamphlets on health, money, employment, and food. Best of all -- many of 'em are free! Of course "free" is a relative term here. YOU paid for them with your thousands of tax dollars shelled out every year. The authors of these pamphlets probably made out like bandits, scaming huge sums of federal money to create these dubious things. Bottom line is, our good friends at the FDA, NIH, DOT, USDA, and SSA need to validate their existance so they create these little toss-offs just to look good. Whether you order any pamphets or not, this catalog is like peering into the mind of the U.S. goverment, what they are obsessed with and what they want to accomplish. Regardless of all that, some of these look too good to pass up. Hmmm..."How to Buy Fresh Vegetables."

The Devil's Bookshelf: Occult - Horror - True Crime - Erotica
The most comprehensive source for rare occult and fiction books I've seen. Lots of books from Crowley, LaVey, Lovecraft, King, and a selection of skulls and skeletons. Nice selection of true crime books too. The prices seem a bit high (mostly $35 - $50) but they're primarily hardcover first editions.

It's plainly designed but with illustrated with some wonderful vintage engravings and photographs.

Directory on Photography of theNude: Books, CD-ROMS, & Limited Edition Prints
Frank Wallis is interested in raising the nude photograph to a high artform -- and with this catalog he's getting much closer. It's a simple catalog featuring works from some of the finest nude photographers working today. None of these prints have lost their edge, as all of these photographers have a strong sense of both the erotic and the aestetic.

Frank took his time to produce in reproducing these fine prints from Craig Morey, Brad Wallis, Bob Shell, Dennis Letbetter, Steven Baratz, Carl Vogtmann, and Todd Friedman. While many of these signed, limited edition phtographic prints are kinda pricy (costing up to $500) some are available for less than $50. Recommended for the connisour.

Ear Noises Small Wall Calendar 1996
Another little one-shot from the folks at *Ear Noises*. This one's a tinly little wal calendar (for a tiny little wall). It kinda reminds me of those little callendars you sometimes get from your favorate resturant or bank. Not really practical, but very amusing.

Flag Concepts Issue 2
"While official whippings have been more or less abolished in most Western nations, an intense interest in the subject still remains. Many people, both male and female, actually practice flagellation for their own enjoyment. Flagellation differs from spanking or more traditional forms of corporal punishment in that a whip or lash type instrument is used and the strokes are not restricted to the bottocks."

This company produces and distributes a series of videos that feature various scenarios featuring acts of flagellation. This profusely illustrated catalog show the many tapes that are available. Most of them using the barest of sets, reminding me of those "broadcasts" seen in David Cronenberg's *Videodrome*.

Freedom of Expression Issue 6
Zine publishers are getting more and more inventive, but leave it to someone like Kembrew to come up with something as unique as this.

She created a packaged commodity containing "New Improved Kembrew's Soul." It's a small glass jar with a brightly printed label, complete with bar code. Inside the jar you'll find a collection of stickers ("David Duke Acid Party, Manson Family Values, Politically Erect"), a note to distributors explaining how "funky fresh" *Kembrew's Soul* is, and a signed certificate of ownership. The best part is the collection of tiny plastic colorful toys. Included in this bunch is a black spider ring, a ballerina charm, a bendable monkey, and a creature from Japanese anime.

Headgear for Gearheads Fall '94
Baseball caps have always been a crucial part of any hipster's wardrobe. But when has *baseball*, of for that matter *any* sport, been a part of a hipster's lifestyle. The East Village hipsters have always had Clayton's caps for covering their heads, but now the West Coast has Headgear for Gearheads, baseball caps with an edge.

Indie Street Issue 8 Summer '95
Kevin has compiled mail order catalogs from many different independent record companies making it easier to order directly without having a zillion different sales sheets scattered all over the place. Over 100 labels are listed along with their addresses, pricelists, and full ordering information.

Besides the catalog compilation, there's a primitive board game, comments on Johnny Lydon's autobiography, a smattering of reviews, and one fan's story of meeting Siouxsie in a club.

A real service to the music buyer as well as all the indie labels.

The Irreverant Rubber Stamp 1995-1996
This is a unique collection of rubber stamps from folks who have been in the printing business since 1979.

This first foray into stamping is an impressive one. All the images are brand new (no old engravings) with a sense of the cartoonish and bizarre. Imagine the cover art from Elton John's "Captain Fantastic" album and you'll have a good idea of the stamps here. There's an ink well with wings, a baseball-playing pig, a man with an hourglass for a head, etc. My favorites are the elaborate calligraphy designs that beautifully depict various people using a single twisting line.

Joseph's Video List July '95
In addition to producing one of the best punkzines around (*No Longer a Fanzine*), Joseph Gervansi has a huge list of videos that he offers for sale and trade.

His list is very ecclectic and features some hard-to-find stuff like Mike Diana's masturbation video, music videos of Nazi bands, Japanese tourture videos, and of course the Rob Lowe sex tape. So extensive it can even be a resource guide. I'm really pleased that he offers to sell these videos to people who don't have much to trade with. His prices are totally resonable, as low as $18 for two films.

Juxtsuppose Cards
This time the Juxtsuppose folks put their ideas into a set of ten handmade postcards. I really like the images on the front but the texts on the back seem somewhat convoluted. I like the one with the TV sets that says "Equally effective for adults." and "The Media: We're a whole lot more than you think" with a diagram illustrating how the media ignores events.

An exciting new mail-order catalog of lesbian, gay, and female musicians. The music ranges from dance grooves to folk to heavy metal, with a helthy emphais on humor in music. Prove it Pretzle Boy
An surprising envelope full of unusual stuff. Somewhat along the lines of mail art and artist stamps, but very zine-like as well.

There's a little mini-book called *Fun with your Brain* that's more along the lines of turture with your brain. My favorate piece is the "Flux Poem Kit" It's a clear packet of different letters cut out from magazines. As you shake it the letters move around and form different combinations, words, or even poems. It's absolutely wonderful. Alice is also giving away a bunch of her zines from her collection. I sure wish I'd see more publishers doing things like that.

Lots of fun for the incurable mail addict.

For this July calendar Ruth told us about her love of Fireworks and how you can buy fireworks in New Hampshire but it's still illegal to use them. Now if it's illegal to take them across state lines what can you possibly do with them one you buy 'em.

A comprehensive source for all your movie poster and still photo needs. You name a star -- the've probably got a picture of 'em available. You name a move -- they've probably got that too. If you're into celebreties you're sure to love this catalog I think this is just a supplimental flyer but there's close to 500 pictures printed here, with most in full-color.

Sightings
Germaine is an artist who turns found photographs into color picture postcards with date, location, and identifying information printed on the back. These aren't elegant photographs. Quite the contrary, they've been rejected by the owner and show signs of their travels. They're a bit unsettling, occupying the ambiguous space between familiarity and fine art.

Six in this batch: an old man with a wooden doll, a completely mangled picture of a cat, a blurry close-up of a guy's face, two kids doin' karate, the ol' self-portait through the mirror, and two topless women (perhaps taken at European beach).

They'll be addressed and mailed to you unless you specify that you'd like 'em kept blank.

Ski & Snowboard Tools '95 - '96
I never really thought that you'd need a bunch of *tools* for working on your skis -- I figured some sandpaper and wax should just about do it. If you're the kind of person who not only loves sking, but also getting everthing into tip-top shape, then this catalog is perfect. Besides all the tools they sell, there's a bunch of tips for everything from filing skis to fitting boots.

Space and Time
Like the zine underground, there's a simmilar network of people that produce, record, and trade tapes of prank phone calls. This network has grown so large and popular that superstars, the Jerky Boys even scored a movie deal.

John Trubee has been producing and recording his own "Calls to Idiots" for over 20 years and has turned his obsessing into a profitable business. This five-page catalog lists all the tapes that Trubee has made over the years, in addition to the work of many other pranksters. Some of the more famous tapes he sells include the watch for a Mazda trade, Tina Chop vs. Bob Larson, Buddy Rich screaming at his band, and Orson Wells attempting to read frozen food ad copy. He also sells a variety of other unsual recording from one of the spectrum to the other.

Stamp Francisco: Fine Art Rubber Stamps
I've often talked about my passion for rubber stamps and mail art, but where does one turn to for rubber stamps that come from a fine art, not a cutesy perspective.

Bill "Picasso" Gaglione has had a long, illustrious carrear in performance and mail art. Acting as the Creative Director for Stamp Francisco has created an institution which I can proudly label the best rubber stamp shop in San Francisco. If you live in San Francisco, head on over to the shop one Saturday and maybe you'll catch one of their unmounted stamp sales, stamping classes, or art openings. If you don't live in San Francisco you can order a copy of their immense stamp catalog. So much in here but my favorites are the array of vehicles, sun symbols, foods, and animals.

$5 Each to Bill (Picasso) Gaglione, Stamp Francisco, 466 8th Street, San Francisco, CA 94103 (128 Pages/S/RSF) No trades/no ads/

Strange Growths Postcards
Looks like Jenny adapted her *Strange Growths* comic book to a series of postcards. Four in a set, each one looking like a page from her book.

I particularly like the one about the girl who was abused by her peers went out and started to take it out on some ants. There's a second set that features illustrations of things in her home town of Durham, North Carolina.

The Usual Suspects: A Catalog from Xines/Desert Moon Periodicals Issue 9
Unlike other independent distributors that carry zines as a sideline, Desert Moon's main emphasis is on zines and independent magazines. Their new catalog is the closest thing I've seen to *Factsheet Five*. They've got listings of tons of magazines with prices and stuff, all available directly from them.

This new catalog is really exciting, they've reformated it to include 35 different categories and expaned to 128 pages. Lots of cover reproductions and descriptions of everything here.

Westworld
Here's a new PBM (play-by-mail) game for all you fans of the Wild West.

If you're new to PBM, imagine role-playing with simplified turn options and various other players inhabiting the same place. In *Westworld*, some of the actions players can take are blowing up the railroad, trading with the Indians, hoboing on a train, and even taking a "brown paper sack" turn. The twelve character types include all the best from your favorite movies and books. Players also receive the game newsletter that gives them the current wanted lists and news from all over *Westworld*. $10 covers the rulebook and basic setup fee or you can get just the rules for $2. Looks like a lot of fun.

WFMU Catalog of Curiosities Summer '95
WFMU has been the savior for die-hard music freaks in the radio desert of New York City. They've turned their fundraising eye to producing a mailorder merchandise catalog. And what merchandise there is. Coolness galore! Sun Ra records, Ed Wood Jr. cards, incredibly strange music, conspiracies theories, and their classic "Crackpots and Visionaries" trading cards.

X Marks the Spot
A very plainly constructed catalog of some of the naughtiest rubber stamps I've seen. While most of these images aren't particularly erotic, they certainly are playful and fun. They remind me of the *Tijuana Bibles* or the Roaring 20's with their naughty by nice depictions of sexuality.

Some of my favorites include the "fill-in" doodle stamps with certain body parts missing, the strip-tease Tinkerbell, and the "Gay $," perfect for stamping on all you cash.

Not the kind of thing you're gonna stamp on the *outside* of your envelops but a wonderful way of adding spice to your letters.
