Now, there are over a hundred and ninety of these animals that have been genetically engineered with human genes and other genes, patent pending at the U.S. Patent Office. By the way, not only animals, but also human material. Dr. Craig Ventnor at the National Institutes of Health is trying to patent over two thousand human BRAIN genes. MICHIO KAKU: Okay. Back up a bit. This super AIDS virus that is transmitted through the air: this was actually documented? They've seen it? Hopefully, it's confined and it's not going to be released into the environment? What is the status of this super AIDS virus? ANDREW KIMBRELL: Well, that's a very good question. Due to a purported accident at the National Institutes of Health .... and remember, this was supposed to be one of the most carefully monitored experiments in NIH HISTORY. Nevertheless, 197 out of the 200 mice were killed accidentally -- at least according to the National Institutes of Health. For the last year-and-a-half I have been trying to find out what happened to the other three mice; whether there are more transgenic mice (those are mice that had the human AIDS virus in their permanent genetic code) which have been created; whether our Government knows of corporations who are creating these animals, I have been unable to get information, as of yet. Clearly, it's going to have to require litigation in order to get our U.S. Government to admit exactly what happened. ROBERT KNIGHT: Let me say, Andy, that this is frightening. I find this information sobering and chilling, and it is detailed in "The Human Body Shop". The book is exquisitely footnoted, referenced and bibliographied. These hazards are allowed to exist because of ignorance in policy and lapses in technology. Andy, earlier you made the careful distinction between biological warfare research and genetic marketing research. And the issue that seems troubling to me is that if genetic patterns are going to be used like fortune-telling in order to screen workers, to exclude presumed disease-prone people from insurance coverage, to alter public policy for presumed crime-prone people, to remediate people who are presumably prone to certain kinds of social activities, it seems that there is a whole latent mechanism for people to be deprived, defunded, to be channeled to a cul de sac of society on the basis of their ethnicity, on the basis of their genes. I'm wondering if there is any difference between that and ethnically targeted biological warfare. It seems to be the moral equivalent of genetic warfare. ANDREW KIMBRELL: Well, we have a new eugenics here. Whether we like it or not, we're going to have to face the situation. As you and Dr. Kaku have pointed out, we are in a situation where the new cadre of genetic engineers are beginning to remodel the old eugenics, which sort of ended with Nazi Germany, into a new eugenics based on this science. And the problem here -- and it's always the problem -- is that the pattern that is being followed is one that fits our stereotypes. What we are now talking about is genetically engineering our human population into our current stereotypes. Recently, for example, NEWSWEEK Magazine did a poll, and 11 percent of Americans said that they would abort a child who was genetically predisposed to obesity. And what we are seeing in a number of instances is the genetic engineers taking advantage of that. Very few people know that right now the most successful genetically engineered pharmaceutical is human growth hormone. This was a four hundred million dollar product last year. It's going to be a much bigger product this year. What's happening is that Genentech and Eli Lilly, two major biotechnology/pharmaceutical companies, are selling this product to parents whose children are short. Now they are not, in any way, dwarfs. They're not, in any way, ill. They are simply short. And what Genentech and Eli Lilly have done, instead of using this drug just to treat people who are ill, they've extended the definition of the illness to anyone who is in the bottom 5 percent of their height for their age. The Government is supporting this, and I just filed litigation against this [practice] last month, of taking dozens of normal children, at the behest of Eli Lilly, and injecting them with human growth hormone. They get three to five injections per week, just to see if it will make them taller. So we have pediatricians selling this to parents around the country because they're afraid that their children, primarily boys in this case, are not going to be tall enough to be successful. So when we talk about the use of genetic engineering to affirm the stereotypes we have -- it's already happening. The National Institutes of Health estimates between fifteen and twenty-five thousand normal youngsters in the United States who, for a ten-year period are getting three to five injections per week of genetically engineered human growth hormone. There is a possible link to leukemia [in the use of this hormone]. There are numerous other health risks, including a recent reported risk of melanoma [a usually malignant tumor]. We're already seeing genetic engineering being used in a terrifying way because this is not being used for disease now. They're using it for non-disease traits. And I think that, with U.S. Government support, as well, they are now treating shortness as a disease that can be cured through genetic engineering. Well, we all know that the view that shortness is bad is simply a cultural prejudice. There is no evolutionary disadvantage to being short; there is probably an evolutionary advantage. But to be tall, White and male in this society is considered to be better than the reverse of that. So, what's next? Are we going to see genetic engineering for skin pigmentation? And as corporations, and as insurance companies, and as the Government discriminates against you and me, based on our [so-called] inferior genetic readout, think about the pressure that is going to be put on us to genetically engineer ourselves to get rid of those traits which are the target of prejudice. So, we are already in the first stage of a new eugenics based on genetic engineering of, in this case, our children to fit our stereotypical images of what they're supposed to look like.
