GARY NULL:
The program is NATURAL LIVING. On today's program, we'll be
continuing with our special, ongoing series: Understanding the
Politics of Science and Medicine in the United States.

Of course, most people know by now that Arthur Ashe, the tennis
legend, a fighter for human rights, died from complications of AIDS.
I watched the different testimonials that were given to him. Indeed,
he deserved them. But one he did not deserve, in my opinion; and
that was the one stated by one of the people close to him who said:
"Well, he had AIDS, and hence, he inevitably was going to die --"
or something to that effect. And I took issues with this.

Over the past seven months, I've met many times with Arthur Ashe
and spoken with him at length. He actually volunteered to appear on
TONY BROWN'S JOURNAL on PBS, on the FOX Network, and also on the
Gary Byrd show on WLIB. He was a friend of Doug Henderson. He was
a friend of mine. He believed that he should hold an open mind.

I supplied him with over 1,800 pages of documents, including hard,
scientific studies showing that, by itself, HIV could not possibly
meet the requirements of being this disease producer. There were
too many anomalies that hadn't been resolved. As a person of good
educational background and a great deal of common sense, he took
these to heart. Time and again, he was GOING to start a protocol --
a more wholistic protocol, including vitamin C drips at higher doses,
glutathione and different herbs. But every time he would say that
he would be there, he would cancel. On thirty different occasions
he cancelled appointments. He seemed to be fearful that he would
stray from the accepted therapy of AZT, DDI, DDC and antibiotics,
which he was using.

That's unfortunate because, in my opinion, he did not have to die.
He did not have to have pneumonia. After all, he had an opportunity
to speak with people who had advanced AIDS, who today are completely
well, who don't even get a head cold. They still have the HIV, but
they're absolutely normal. And they use a wholistic protocol.

So, today's program -- in fact, all of the programs this week --
are to examine a different perspective on the subject of AIDS; one
that may, in some areas of our community, including the research
community, give them new information to think on. After all, the
very same people who have run our War on Cancer -- and who have NOT
done the best of jobs -- are now the people who are running the
War on AIDS, and doing a worse job.

My guests today are going to explore some of the contradictions in
the Media interpretation of what the official version of AIDS is
and how it should be approached. Dr. Morton Walker, with a
background in nutritional medicine, Michael Ellner, an activist in
the cause of educating the Public, in general, and specifically,
people who are HIV-infected, as well as those with AIDS, from a
consumerist point of view -- and Dr. Rute Bernstein, from the
scientific perspective.

We're going to start with Dr. Bernstein. Dr. Bernstein has a
substantial background in science with the Department of Physiology,
Michigan State University in East Lansing. Welcome to our program.

I'd like to go through a lot of material very quickly. I'd like as
much documentation in your statements as possible. I've asked
members of the Media, science writers, scientists and physicians to
pay careful attention to the statements made today because, finally,
it might give them a different perspective: that what they've been
saying about AIDS isn't the whole picture. Let's begin with the
idea that this is a new disease. Your thoughts.

DR. BERNSTEIN:
I'd say definitely not. I and probably a dozen other people around
the World have used the Center for Disease Control's definition of
AIDS -- which is the one they use for collecting data -- and I have
gone back through the medical literature and found, at the very
least, several hundred cases that match the surveillance definition
by using the most rigorous criteria, and probably several thousand
more cases [wherein] that information simply isn't sufficient to
determine, absolutely, whether they were AIDS-like or not.
But there is absolutely no doubt that there were people dying,
as far back as 1872, [that's 1*8*72] of all the typical diseases of
AIDS, and with the same risk factors that we see today: drug use,
multiple blood transfusions, things like that.

GARY NULL:
Let's go through these in detail, one at a time. Let's lay them out
as comprehensively as possible so that the Public understands what
we're saying: that AIDS is not new, the condition itself is not new.
Let's start out by first attacking the myth that AIDS *IS* HIV,
that HIV *IS* the sole cause of what we're calling AIDS.

DR. BERNSTEIN:
Well that, again, has been called into question by a large number
of people. I think the most prominent person, at this point, is
the one who discovered HIV. And that's Luke Montenier[sp] at the
Pasteur Institute. He shocked an international meeting of AIDS
researchers, in the summer of 1990, by standing up and announcing
that HIV infection, by itself, cannot cause AIDS. He went on to say
that it has to have what he calls "co-factors." And he identified
a very specific one: the smallest replicating bacteria. It's called
a micoplasma. He felt that HIV had to at least be complicated by a
concurrent micoplasma infection in order to cause AIDS. There are
other people, such as myself and a large number of other people,
who have suggested that the range of co-factors is much, much
broader than that. And certainly, there are a large number of cases
on record -- and you can find these in journals such as THE LANCET,
the premier medical journal in England -- of people who have been
infected with AIDS, at this point, for over fifteen years, who have
no symptoms whatsoever.
                        (to be continued)

This information could benefit millions of people who
have, or who will have the HIV virus. So please help to
disseminate it by posting the episodes of this ongoing
series to computer bulletin boards, and by posting
hardcopies in public places, both on and off campus.
