MARTIN LEE:
Well, in the case of Italy, where it seems to have gotten much
farther than in most of the other countries, the notion that it was
simply a contingency in case of a Soviet invasion was debunked by
Felige Cassone and other investigators in Italy who noted the
connection between a lot of "gladiators" and terrorist activity.

United States policy makers were concerned most of all about a slide
to the left in Italy. After the War, the Communist Party, the
Socialist Party were very strong. There was a concern, particularly
in the early `60s, with the Vatican too, and the liberalization of
the Catholic Church, and that this would impact the Italian
electorate in a way that would help the Left, help the Communist
Party which was a very strong party -- the second largest. And a
great fear among U.S. policy makers and the CIA was that the
Communist Party might emerge some day as the biggest party in Italy.
It was very close to doing that.

At the time, in the early `60s, General Vernon Walters was the
military attache`. He later became Deputy Director of the CIA. And
he urged the Italian Military to undertake a coup d'etat if the
communists were to take over, or if it looked like the communists
were about to gain power through an election. As a result of that,
something was drawn up called "Plan Solo" which was a plan, in the
mid-1960s, for a coup. And they drew up a list of Italian
politicians who would be rounded up and assassinated after the coup
took place. And high on that list was Aldo Moro, the former Prime
Minister of Italy who later was abducted and assassinated by the
"Red Brigade", an organization which, it was learned through
hearings by the Italian Parliament, was also linked to the GLADIO
program.

LAURA FLANDERS:
Martin, Israel's secret services acquired much of their expertise
working precisely in the behind-the-lines fashion that you describe,
in their case, within the Eastern European countries and within the
Soviet Union. Is there any link-up between the programs that you're
discussing and what later became the Mossad in Israel?

MARTIN LEE:
I don't know of an explicit link-up in terms of personnel, but
their principles are similar. The Mossad and other aspects of
Israeli intelligence function oftentimes as a cut-out for the CIA
in that when the CIA does not want to be directly involved in
certain kinds of activities, they will subcontract, as it were,
the Israelis to do that.

And we see similar kinds of things happening in Western and
Northern Europe through this "stay-behind" program where the CIA
didn't want to be directly linked to the program. So, to ensure
plausible deniability, they would work in Italy with Free Masonic
groups and, in other countries, the CIA would work with neo-Nazi
and neo-fascist organizations. The CIA used NATO as a cover for
this. They worked through the bureaucracy of NATO so that these
activities would not be directly linked to the CIA.

But this information has now come out in Italy and in other
countries. And it has provoked major headlines throughout Europe.
And yet, there is very little information presented in the United
States Press about this. And to the extent that any coverage was
given at all, the Press seemed to buy, hook, line and sinker, the
notion that it was just simply a plan in case of a Soviet invasion
and that it was never actually used. And they quoted a few CIA
officials. And that was that.

[JD: This gives us insight into how thoroughly the CIA has
subverted our U.S. Mass Media. The numerous conflicting
reports we are getting about the bombing of the World Trade
Center, on TV and in the Print Press, are mostly concocted by
CIA operatives employed subversively within NBC, ABC, CBS,
TIME Magazine, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report,
   The New York Times, etc.]

ROBERT KNIGHT:
Is there any reason to believe that the [terrorist] activities of
this [CIA-sponsored] stay-behind network have abated?

MARTIN LEE:
Well, the network was exposed in the wake of the so-called ending of
the Cold War. And that is significant. But these stay-behind units
were active until recently.

In Belgium in 1985, for example, there was a series of BIZARRE
killings. They were called the "Supermarket Massacres" where hooded
gunmen just walked into crowded supermarkets and just started
shooting people. And these massacres have since been linked to the
GLADIO unit in Belgium. And the Belgian Parliament that investigated
this felt that, at the time, the reason for this was .... It was
during the period when the United States Government was trying to
foist the Euro-Missiles (Cruise missiles and so forth) upon various
European countries -- to base them in these countries. And there
were HUGE demonstrations in Europe against the Euro-Missiles. And
certain European countries threatened to break ranks and not go
along with this [missile distribution]. This would be
unprecedented that NATO would split along these lines. And Belgium
was one of these countries. So, it was thought by certain members
of the Belgian Parliament that the Supermarket Massacres were an
attempt to sow confusion and fear among the populace, through
terrorism, which would then provoke [public outcries for] a
law-and-order government, a strong-man government that would then
proceed to seize power and install law-and-order through
extra-parliamentary means.

[JD: This heinous strategy, used by powerful Establishment fascists,
is a very old one which was successfully employed by the Nazis
to seize power in Germany. We'll soon see if our TV-hypnotized
American citizenry is stupid enough to fall for it, despite
the numerous historical precedents. Most Americans ARE probably
stupid enough to hand over our freedom to those drooling, would-be
dictators who are now waiting in the wings.]

The American Public is evidently in dire need of the truth,
for when the plutocracy feeds us sweet lies instead of the
bitter truth that would evoke remedial action by the People,
then we are in peril of sinking inextricably into despotism.

So, please post the episodes of this ongoing series to
computer bulletin boards, and post hardcopies in public places,
both on and off campus. The need for concerned people, alerting
their neighbors to overshadowing dangers, still exists, as it
did in the era of Paul Revere. That need is as enduring as
        society itself.
