8 April 1989, UCSD Main Gym, San Diego, CA

Review by Jason Snell (jsnell@macuser.com)

I've wanted to write something about this concert for a while, so here I go...

It was one of the hottest days I've ever experienced anywhere. As a freshman at UCSD, I was less than a 5 minute walk from the gym, were I got to experience my first rock concert ever.

Roger McGuinn opened, and after he played some quiet numbers solo from his new solo album, Crowded House joined him onstage for Mr. Tambourine Man, Turn Turn Turn, and Eight Miles High.

Then the CH set began (after a break), with Neil appearing and calling out, "Where'd she come from?" Well, that puzzled us, though the answer was, "She came all the way from America..." and into "Mean To Me" we went.

Evidently before the concert the band had stopped by the UCSD natatorium, located right behind the gym, to visit with the UCSD water polo team, which was the midst of breaking the world record for the longest continuously-played water polo game ever.

The heat was so unbearable in the gym (especially for those of us standing in the front, right in front of the stage) that at one point Paul Hester dashed offstage and returned with a plastic bucket filled with ice and water, which he tossed on us. I owe Paul Hester my life.

All the songs they played were from the first two albums, with the exception of "This Is Massive." The one I remember the most is a very cool rendition of "In The Lowlands," featuring the amended line: "Ghost cars on the San Diego Freeway...".

The show ended with an encore of "Don't Dream..." and "Better Be Home Soon." All in all, it was a pretty damned good first concert of my life.
