Backed by Paul on Piano, Dave on Bass, Finn kicked off the evening with a stirring rendition of Only Talking Sense, which lighted up the audience which packed the hall. Neil and Tim seemed in fine mood and voice despite Tim's ankle injury leaving him barefoot throughout the night. There were nostalgic moments as the brothers relived some of their Split Enz days with Poor Boy, What's the Matter With You and Time For A Change, the crowd appreciative of some musical history.

Of course, the core of the concert were the songs off FINN. The addition of the extra musicians on bass and piano on most of the songs gave a different flavour to the previous tour in October/November, bringing the songs more towards the feel of the album rather than the even more stripped back arrangements of their last tour.

There were moments in Niwhai, Suffer Never where Neil showed he can let loose with a barrage of improvised, discordant and raw electric guitar work.

The evening was peppered with anecdotes, family films and the occasional sibling banter. Perhaps playing upon the much focused attention on their 'rivalry', a few harsh words and showmanship were exchanged towards the end, but the concert ended with brothers in arms bowing towards an appreciative audience who had been part of a special evening.

Highlights of the Melbourne Finn show, Feb 13, Dallas Brooks Centre.

*The Finns' Super 8 home movies being projected onto the backdrop during the encore. (Including a nativity scene featuring Tim as Joseph and Neil as....yep, the baby Jesus!)

*A mock mud-slinging match between the brothers, who claimed to have finally discovered sibling rivalry.

*An impromptu music lesson from Neil to Tim, teaching him the chords of "Distant Sun." ("...I don't pretend to know what you want, but I offer G.")

*"Many's The Time" included in the set.

*Fairy-lights on the piano and drum-kit, and a truly brilliant lighting design overall.

*Neil's announcement of his and Sharon's 14th anniversary.

*"Dirty Creature." (Always a highlight.)

The six people that I took loved it, except for one guy who wanted more Enz songs. My only complaint is that "How Will You Go" was left out. See the show even if you are on of those listees who isn't crazy about the album. The live version is a whole different kettle of Finns. (Sorry!)
