In a word; FINNTASTIC. There, I've gotten that pun out of my system.
It was a great performance in general. The crowd was mostly appreciative of the songs, both old and new. I didn't manage to grab a set list but by the sound of it, it was pretty much the same as the previous performances.
To warm up the crowd was Dave Dobyn. He sang for 50 mins. I don't think I recognised any of his songs but they were still mostly good. There was quite a large contingent of New Zealanders by the reception he got.
They started off with Only Talking Sense, Poor Boy, In Love With It All, Angel's Heap, There Goes God, and Suffer Never, Time for a Change, Where is My Soul, Four Season, Niwhai, What's the Matter with You, Mood Swinging Man, Eyes of the World, Dirty Creature, It's Only Natural, Kiss the Road, How Will You Go, Weather With You, Last Day of June, History Never Repeats, Charlie and Paradise (with a bit of Island in the Sun and I See Red).
History Never Repeats was an interesting rendition with only piano and percussion. Neil commented that it sounded quite hmmmm like (in his indoubtable NZ accent). They were both in quite fine voice though towards the end, I think Tim's voice was a bit tired to give Charlie the full treatment.
From the FINN songs, I am ever more excited to hear it. People were passing out $5 Off vouchers at the exit and it says Available from Monday 6th.
I thought it was great to see Neil really rough up (aurally) his guitar in tracks like Niwhai, Kiss the Road and (to some extent) Suffer Never. It gives it a bite. Overall, I thought the two man band format worked well. It was interesting to see the songs stripped of their layers but still have their essence preserved.
