Since we're not well acquainted with the new album, you'll have to forgive us for not quite knowing what the first song was (shock, horror, the shame of it all...), but the second was 'Poor Boy' followed by such gems as 'Time for a Change', 'What's the matter with you', a great version of 'Dirty Creature', 'There Goes God', 'Suffer Never', 'Mood Swinging Man', 'Only Talking Sense', 'Where is My Soul', 'Newhai'; the encores included 'Kiss the Road of Raratonga', 'Last Day of June' which both of us found incredibly moving, a cruisin' version of 'History Never Repeats' (in Tim's words), 'Weather with You'...We've missed out a whole lot of tracks which keep occurring to us in waves of frenzied memory-grabs.... The brothers played "Four Seasons", 'Sweet Dreams', 'Chocolate Cake' and due to a very well orchestrated request for the audience, Neil delivered a not too bad version of "Distant Sun" - the "curve ball" for the evening. The banter between brothers on stage was good, and they were certainly having fun, as indeed the entire audience was. After the second encore set, which ended with 'Paradise/Island in the Sun' the crowd still cheered for more. I'm not sure the National could have survived another round of stomping feet, cheers, applause and woo-oos though. We left content - more than content - well fed and in no need of anything further since we were provided with a nice rendition of 'Sweet Dreams'. We trekked back home, with purple tour t-shirts and all a-glow. For those in Melbourne, check out a future issue of In-Press for a possible picture from the gig.
